Committee Minutes
Regular Meeting
August 29th, 2006

7:00 PM

Attending Members: Ed Taiman, Joseph Colangelo, Mike Harnad, Bob Portello and Mike Pinatti.  John Sahi was also in attendance.  Ed Taiman arrived @ 7:22PM.

Meeting called to order at 7:05 PM.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
The minutes from the previous WRC meeting were reviewed.  Mike Pinatti made a motion to accept the minutes without changes, which was seconded by Joseph Colangelo.  All members were unanimous in approval.

GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Bob Portello reported that he would create a template for John Sahi to use in a weekly email report to the members of the WRC.  This report would be an informal update of the Recreation Department activities, and ongoing projects directly related to the WRC for the previous week.  This activity will keep the WRC members better connected with projects and programs that they are responsible for.

DIRECTORS REPORT:
It was reported that the Halls Pond program for summer swimming lost a total of approximately $3,000.00.  This has been a regular trend for the past three years.  Possible solutions would be as follows:
·       Adjust the hours of operation.
·       Provide a free first weekend to attract more townspeople.
·       Check for passes at the entrance.
·       Provide day passes for occasional users.
·       Eliminate Monday’s.
·       Provide ½ season passes.
·       Request for a budget increase on a line item as the “Waterfront Program”.

John also reported that the soccer and fencing programs introduced this year have been successful, and that all other programs were operating as expected.

OLD BUSINESS:
A.      The progress of the RRAC will be sent to the WRC members in an email using Bob Portellos template.  The hope is that seeding will be accomplished by 9/15/06.
B.      This topic will be held out until next meeting.

NEW BUSINESS:
A.      The men’s basketball program on Sunday nights will e held to a total of [25] participants.  The first two weeks of sign ups will be open to Willington residents only.  Following this time any open slots will be offered to other possible participants.  The High School basketball “pick up” game program will also be offered this year.  Travel games were suggested but will be discussed in our next meeting.
B.      Calendar events included; preparing for basketball program time slots at Hall School, and sending out flyers to the schools for the upcoming programs.
C.      The WRC members decided that Joseph Colangelo and Robert Portello would be the sub-committee to oversee the “seeding project”.  A sub committee for the “baseball field project” will be chosen next meeting.  It was also decided that the RRAC items list be changed to start at item #4 which is the infield for a baseball field.
D.      John Sahi will pursue the possibility of mowing on Fridays during baseball season to get fields prepared each week, therefore assisting the Public Works Department in this job.
E.      The base paths of all baseball fields are overgrown and need to be maintained.  John Sahi will try to find an “organic” solution to this problem.

VI.          ADJOURNMENT:
Ed Taiman motioned to adjourn, which was seconded by Mike Harnad.  The meeting adjourned at 8:25PM.  The next meeting is scheduled for September 12th, 2006 at 7:00PM at the Town Hall Office Building.

Respectfully submitted 9/5/06

Joseph C. Colangelo
